Engineering Design Guidelines
Signing and Striping Plans

The information and guidelines contained herein are to be used whenever applicable. In the event a development is to be constructed in stages, master utility plans are required prior to submittal of the first stage improvement plans. The master utility plans shall show all improvements, including interim (phased) and ultimate improvements. Signing and Striping Plans
Show all signs and striping necessary for the development including interim signs and striping, guard fences, etc. The signing and striping plans prepared by the Design Engineer shall conform to the following general requirements:
1. A separate sheet shall be used for "Signing and Striping" plans.
2. The following shall be shown on the plans:
a. Right-of-way: width and centerline
b. Face of curb: location relative to R/W and centerline
c. Edge of pavement: location relative to centerline and
right of way edge in the case of partial improvements or where existing improvements are involved.
d. Raised island (cobblestone, landscaped) or berm: width(s) and location(s) relative to face of curb adjacent to sidewalk.
e. The location or stations of monuments, B.C.'s, E.C.'s, etc.
can be used to lay out striping.
f. A typical symbol legend shall be included with the plans.

A. Signing
- All signs shall be shown using a standard symbol; the type of sign shall be indicated by use of the standard code number in the California "Traffic Manual" and "Uniform Sign Chart."
- Special signs, guide signs, etc., shall be indicated.
- A "Sign Schedule" shall be included on the plans. The following items shall be included (delineators such as type N markers, etc.):

- A sign symbol or legend shall be shown on plans to indicate type of mounting such as street light mounted, iron pipe, wood post mounting and any special break-away mounting.
- Show any existing signs that is to be removed, relocated or to remain.
- Street name signs are to be installed by the developer's contractor and shall be shown on the Signing & Striping Plan.
B. Striping
The following striping features are to be included:
- A typical cross section(s) showing curbs, medians, lane widths etc.
- typical detail for each type of lane marking used, indicating color, widths, spacing etc.
The following items shall be shown with the necessary location and dimensioning information:
- All lane striping, centerlines, lane lines, left (or right) turn lanes, edge lines, bike lanes, etc.
- All pavement markings and legends including STOPs, ONLYs, arrows, stop bars, crosswalks etc.
- All striping shall be located and dimensioned relative to face of curb or other existing feature.
- how lane widths: center-to-center or face of curb to center of stripe.
- Show limits and lengths of transitions, tapers, lane width variations etc. Show minimum (or maximum) where appropriates.
- Striping plans for multi-lane streets will include raised reflective pavement markers of the appropriate type as shown in the applicable details of the "Traffic Manual" (Caltrans), unless otherwise approved by the City Engineer.
