Parks & Recreation Services staff’s five of the City’s 14 commissions and committees.

The Arts Commission was founded October 17, 2000. “The Milpitas Arts Commission, in order to enhance the quality of life in its community, shall promote, provide and encourage the arts in the City of Milpitas.”  The Arts Commission reviews artist applications for the Phantom Art Gallery, grant applications for the Cultural Arts Support Program (LINK TO WHERE?) and promotes art throughout the Milpitas community.

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Commission advises the City Council regarding the operation and maintenance of recreation, leisure services, and historic preservation activities. The Commission advises the City Council on the acquisition, planning, and development of new and existing parks and facilities. The Commission also assists with identifying, protecting, and enhancing structures and other features reflecting special aspects of the City’s cultural heritage. The Commission consists of seven members and two alternates. Members are appointed to three-year terms and alternates are appointed to two-year terms.

The Youth Advisory Commission was founded in April of 1996. The Youth Advisory Commission (YAC) advises the Council on matters pertaining to youth and teens in Milpitas.  Commissioners must be in grades 7 through 12 and live in Milpitas.

The Senior Advisory Commission was founded on April 20, 1993. The Commission advises the City Council on matters pertaining to recreation, leisure, and nutrition services for the Senior Citizens of Milpitas. Members of the Commission are required to be active members of the Barbara Lee Senior Center.

The Library Advisory Commission was founded on January 17, 1961. The Library Advisory Commission advises the Santa Clara County Library system which operates the Milpitas Library under the jurisdiction of the recently created Joint Powers Authority. This Commission helps determine library activities and levels of service. A Library Subcommittee was established to assist with the design and functionality of the new 60,000 square foot library being built at 160 N. Main St. Library Update
