The Personnel and Training Unit works closely with the City Personnel Division in the recruitment, testing and selection of all sworn and civilian police personnel. The training records and
personnel records for police department employees are maintained by this unit. This Unit is also responsible for coordinating and providing State and Departmental mandated training to all
police personnel. This Unit is also the Department's liaison with the Regional Criminal Justice Training Center, serves on the academy advisory board, and provides the direct link between the
Department and the State of California Commission on Peace Officer's Standards & Training (POST). Any questions of this Unit may be directed to the Unit Sergeant at (408) 586-2407 Mondays

Reserve Police Office Recruiting
The Milpitas Police Department is beginning a continuous recruitment process for the position of Reserve Police Officer. The Department has been authorized 15 reserve police officer positions.
The Department is a full service organization, presently staffed by 95 sworn officers and 30 civilian full time employees. The Department adopted a Community Oriented Policing philosophy in 1992. The goal is to seek long term solutions to crime problems by building a stronger partnership with our community. The MPD employs proactive crime prevention methods to reduce incidences of crime by organizing community resources.
Reserve Police Officers are a very important component to our commitment to the community to provide professional and responsive policing services.
Reserve Police Officers are required to volunteer a minimum of eighteen (18) hours per month. Initial uniforms, safety equipment, and advanced training is provided by the Department.
Qualifications
Applicants must have completed the basic Police Academy or equivalent prior to applying. Applicants must have a valid and current California Driver's License.
Selection Procedures
Application packets are available at the Milpitas City Hall. Packets will not be mailed - nor are they available in electronic media format. The application package contains further instructions. A completed application, and other required documentation, must be submitted prior to any consideration being given to the candidate.
The Department presents an orientation workshop prior to holding oral interviews. Applicants must attend this workshop.
Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an oral interview - weighted 100%, and a physical agility exam. Those who successfully complete the interview and the agility phases will be placed upon an eligibility list.
Candidates from the eligibility list will be exposed to further testing which could include the following:
- full background investigation,
- polygraph examination,
- psychological examination and interview, and
- physical examination.
