Chief Brian Sturdivant Bio

Brian Sturdivant has 29 years of extensive experience within fire services administration and operations. As Fire Chief in Milpitas CA, appointed in September 2010, his oversight includes planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the activities of the fire department to include, fire EMS emergency response, fire prevention regulation and education, hazardous materials regulation and response, and all supportive administrative services. He also serves as an integral member of the Milpitas City Manager's Sr. Staff to provide strategic direction for the community.

Prior to his appointment to Fire Chief in Milpitas he served as Deputy Fire Chief in Scottsdale Arizona. This position included command positions from 2005 until 2010. He served as a Battalion Chief/Paramedic and Division Chief of Training and EMS for the Fulton County Fire Rescue Department in Atlanta GA from 1986 until 2005. And he also served with the East Point GA Fire Department from 1983 until 1986.

Chief Sturdivant graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School with a Master's Degree in Homeland Defense and Security, Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Safety Administration and Shorter University with an Associates Degree in Business Administration. He was awarded a Fire Fellowship to the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government in 2011 were he attended and completed the prestigious Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program.

He has earned Chief Fire Officer Designation (CFOD) from the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Certified Public Manager Designation (CPM) from Arizona State University and Member Grade Designation (MIFireE) from the Institute of Fire Engineers. He graduated from the Clark Atlanta University Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute in Fire Service Management where he currently serves as an instructor and the Arizona State University Fire Service Institute.

Chief Sturdivant is an adjunct member on the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Homeland Security and Terrorism Committee and is a FEMA Region IX representative with the IAFC Go Teams.
