Police Recruitment

If you are not afraid of hard work, long hours, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and giving of yourself to serve others, you should consider a career in law enforcement with the Milpitas Police Department.

FAQ’s

What are the minimum requirements for the job?

  • You must be a US Citizen
  • College Coursework: units must be from an accredited college or university with major coursework in police science, liberal arts, business, political science, psychology, or a related field.
    • Entry Level: 40 semester units or 60 quarter units required
    • Lateral or Academy Graduates: 60 semester units or 90 quarter units required

How do I apply during open recruitment?

If you are an entry-level applicant you need to do the following:

You can apply online at CalOpps.org or complete the City of Milpitas employment application and send it to our HR department with the following:

  1. A copy of your college transcripts;
  2. A copy of a POST entry level test with a T-score of 50 or better, taken within the past 12 months;
  3. A copy of a POST physical agility test, taken through the Southbay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium within the past 12 months.

If you are an academy graduate or a lateral applicant you need to do the following:

You can apply online at CalOpps.org or complete the City of Milpitas employment application and send it to our HR department with the following documents:

  1. A copy of your college transcripts;
  2. A copy of your POST Basic certificate, or
  3. A copy of your academy graduation certificate.

All applications received by the indicated deadline will be screened to make sure they meet the minimum requirements. Oral board interviews will be scheduled for those selected to continue.

Is there a written test?

Yes, there is a test for entry-level applicants only. You must pass with a minimum T-score of 50 prior to submitting your application.

Is there a physical agility test?

Yes, there is a physical agility test for entry-level applicants only. You must pass the test prior to submitting your application.

Where can I take the POST entry-level test or the physical agility test?

You should contact the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium. They offer the written test and the physical agility test.

How do I prepare for the oral board?

What is the next step after the oral boards?

Those applicants who pass the oral board will be placed on an eligibility list with all other applicants who have passed the oral board. The best applicants will be selected to proceed on to the next stage, which is a background investigation.
