N. Main Street Utilities & Streetscape Improvements
Weller Lane to Carlo Street
Projects 8153 & 8165
Street reconstruction is underway and new “streetscape” is starting to take shape as N. Main St. begins its transformation. Improvements span from Weller Ln. to Carlo St. and encompass two implementation phases.
Placing all overhead utilities underground, the first major step, is completed. Throughout this project, and during streetscape improvements, extra engineering efforts are in place to keep N. Main St. open during construction.
Conducted in two phases, this project will showcase what Main St. can become in future years. Scroll down for a collection of construction photos.
Phase 1
Construction began in April 2007 and as of April 2008 is 85% complete. The streetscape will transform N. Main Street into a pedestrian friendly setting with decorative lighting, street trees and other landscaping. It will also use traffic calming elements such as median landscape islands, narrower intersections, and decorative crosswalks at sidewalk level.
On the east side of N. Main St., this phase involves installing curbing from the Calaveras/237 off-ramp to Weller Lane. This curb line will define the street in front of the new Milpitas Public Library.
On the west side improvements include the curb, sidewalk and landscaping from the common driveway between the County Health Center and the senior housing project, Devries Place, to Weller Lane.
Phase 2
This phase will complete projects from Phase 1, includes landscaping and final surface improvements, and continues the decorative streetscale plan onto a portion of Carlo St.
Part of the decorative streetscape on the east side of N. Main St. will be completed with the library. Streetscape completion is anticipated by winter of 2009.
