Preparing Milpitas teens, ages 15-18, to successfully and confidently enter the workforce by providing new opportunities, goal setting, hands on exposure, breaking down barriers and career soft skill building.
The City of Milpitas Recreation and Community Services Department in partnership with several Milpitas based companies, will be offering a Summer Teen Work-readiness program, Milpitas Youth Force (MYF). The purpose of MYF is to prepare Milpitas teens, ages 15-18, to successfully and confidently enter the workforce by providing new opportunities, goal setting, hands on exposure, breaking down barriers and career soft skill building.
How it works:
From March to May, the City of Milpitas MYF program staff member will develop career skill training curriculum (2 week in-service training and Friday on going trainings), enhance/develop/solicit partnerships with Milpitas businesses and identify/interview Milpitas teens interested in effectively entering the workforce.
Based on the interests and skills of each individual teen, the MYF program lead staff member will place them at a work site. The goal of this program is to provide teens with valuable job experience that will create a solid foundation for their future employment.
Mondays-Fridays, June 10-August 2, 2019
Weeks 1 and 2 (June 10-June 21) will be in-service training for all participants. Training will focus on career soft skill building. The focus will be on Items like resume building, interviewing skills, professional presentation, effective communication and leadership.
A key element to in-service will be to “break down barriers,” participants may face when entering the workforce. As part of the program, participants will be given:
- A VTA Pass, valid for the months of June-August, along with training on how to effectively use public transportation.
- A work clothes stipend to a local Milpitas clothing store, along with training on how to dress at workplace and budget accordingly. (Participants and City Staff Member will purchase these items together as part of a “field trip,” during in-service).
- CPR/First Aid Certification via Red Cross.
- Team building opportunity at a local ropes course, to teach communication and teamwork as part of a “field trip.”
Several guest speakers from reputable South Bay Area Companies are scheduled to present during in-service training as well. Guest speakers will each share their “career journey,” and inspire and educate participants on various career building topics.
Weeks 3-8 (June 24-August 2) participants will begin working at their job placement site. Participants will work Mondays-Thursdays, 6 hours per day. Each Friday participants will be with City of Milpitas Staff to “check-in,” and participate in on-going training.
The final day of the program, August 2, an awards recognition lunch is scheduled for both participants and participating Milpitas businesses.

Interested teens must complete a MYF Program Application and Career Interest Form. All applications will be reviewed to ensure they met the minimum qualifications (see application for minimum qualifications). Selected candidates will be invited to participate in a panel interview. Interviews will be conducted in a panel format. All participants will be chosen by May 17, 2019. All Teens must have a valid work-permit in order to be eligible for this program. All Teens over the age of 18, must be finger printed.
On May 31, 6:00pm-7:00pm, participants and their parents/guardians will participate in a “MYF Meet and Mingle,” kickoff event at Jose Higuera Adobe Park. MYF City staff will provide important information to families and will be available to answer questions. Light refreshments and drinks will be served.
