HHWE & SRRE

Household Hazardous Waste Element (HHWE): Adobe Icon

Hazardous chemicals are prevalent in our society. Hazardous substances can be found throughout the home, garage, and garden as constituents in such products as cleaners, paints and pesticides. In the past, programs to properly manage HHW were virtually non-existent, thereby resulting in improper disposal methods such as in the garbage, down the sewer, into storm drains, or directly onto the ground. The improper disposal of HHW leads to costly consequences to the environment and ultimately our health. The City of Milpitas developed a document called the Household Hazardous Waste Element (HHWE) which identifies the methods and programs for properly managing household hazardous waste generated within the City.

Source Reduction and Recycling Element:

The City of Milpitas also maintains a document called the Source Reduction and Recycling Element (SRRE). The SRRE identifies methods of source reduction, recycling and composting. The plan provides a general outline of how the City plans to meet the state-mandated waste diversion goals of 25 and 50 percent by 1995 and 2000, respectively.
