Milpitas Acts to Increase Affordable Housing
City Council approves several proposals that will contribute to the supply of affordable housing
Milpitas, Calif. ‐‐‐ The Milpitas City Council on Tuesday approved several proposals that will lead to the creation
of additional affordable housing in the community and help meet the critical need for homes that local residents
can afford to buy or rent.
The City Council approved a new Affordable Housing Ordinance that will require developers to set aside 15
percent of the units in new residential construction as affordable homes. The ordinance will apply to projects
with at least ten units.
In addition, the Council approved a site development permit and financial support for a project with
approximately 100 affordable units located at 355 Sango Court, and a loan restructure for the Montevista
Apartments on South Main Street that will result in the conversion of 50 market rate units into new affordable
homes along with the rehabilitation of the existing 163 units of affordable housing and 143 units of market‐rate
housing.
Milpitas housing prices have almost doubled in the past five years according to Trulia, and the rental market has
increased 40 percent over the same period. However, the median household income in Santa Clara County has
only increased by seven percent.
